Bivalves – the group including clams, oysters and scallops – have a huge range of diets. Many, like the Baltic clam are filter feeders, taking nutrients out of the water column and sometimes, hoovering small pieces up with their siphons, other ‘farm’ single cell algae to produce energy, some are chemosymbiotic and there are even a few that are active predators in the deep sea!
